Times they are a-changing! The dust may be settling a bit as companies are adjusting to a distributed enterprise, which takes on a whole new meaning from what we knew three months prior. We made it to May! There have been a lot of lessons learned over the past 45 days and we're helping our clients move beyond the initial pivot of urgency response to strategic planning. The recent COVID-19 crisis is a prime example of why contingency plans are so critical in a world that seems increasingly vulnerable to disrupting events. It also shows just how little time you may have to implement a plan. In a world today that operates at the speed of digital on a normal day, even the best laid plans are hard to implement when everything is trending all at once. As Mike Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
The WEI team has officially surpassed the 30-day mark of working from home. Depending on your local state government guidance, you may have been working from home longer. Either way we've learned a lot in 30 days about business continuity challenges and we continue to work with our customers to ensure their BC plans are effectively working as planned. The good news is that they are, and we're humbled to continue to support our customers in healthcare and higher ed with technology solutions and services that are driving their business forward through uncertain times, and uncertain obstacles.
We are learning a lot about risk these days. The medical industry is combating one of the greatest health threats of the modern era. Then there are the economic and financial risks that businesses and their employees are facing in a world of uncertainty. Lost in all of this, is the continual barrage of threats within the IT digital world that nearly everyone belongs to. The world currently undergoes 720 million hack attempts and more than 350,000 new malware strains are created every day. It is no wonder we call it a zero-trust world today.
An article in the New York Times dated March 18, 2020 says it best, “Tech can make remote work miserable.” As companies across the country send their employees home to work remotely in an effort to keep them safe and abide by government orders, millions of employees new to the idea of working from home are realizing the tech headaches involved in it. An astonishing 50+ percent of the U.S. is now working from home according to the latest estimates. That’s roughly 85 million people. While the involved numbers should be a surprise, the fact that many of these users have poor or inadequate wireless at home to utilize for work shouldn’t be.
